CSIR NET exams are held twice in a year. To appear for this exam, you must have M.Sc or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks. For Junior Research Fellowship, the age limit is 19-28 years. You should be at least 21 years for Lectureship post.

The question paper includes three parts A, B, and C. Part A is common to all subjects. It contains at most 20 questions based on Research Aptitude Test and General Science. Part B includes 50 multiple choice questions. It covers the syllabus related to the subject chosen. Part C consists of 75 questions for which the candidate has to apply scientific knowledge to get the solution. There will be a negative marking for each incorrect answer. The duration of the test is 3 hours.

The syllabus of CSIR NET Earth Science includes The Earth and the Solar System, Earth Materials, surface features and Processes, Surface features and Processes, Interior of the Earth, Deformation and Tectonics, Oceans and Atmosphere, Environmental Earth Sciences, Mineralogy and Petrology, Structural Geology and Geotectonics, Paleontology and its Applications, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Marine Geology and Paleoceanography, Geochemistry, Economic Geology, Precambrian Geology and Crustal Evolution, Quaternary Geology, Geophysics, Applied Geology, Physical Geography, Meteorology, Ocean Sciences etc.

A few reference books for the CSIR NET exam are Earth Atmospheric Ocean and Planetary Science Guides by Rph Editorial Board, An Objective Earth Science by S.Ahamad etc.
