    Dear Aspirant,

For applying to the IAS exam one should have passed out the Bachelor degree (Any specialisation) with a recognised university which comes under UGC.

No doubt, whether your degree comes in distance or regular.

Checkout whether your university comes under UGC or not
    log on to the www.ugc.ac.in

Here below are some important points which will help you to Crack Indias most toughest exam :-

First, study each topic from the IAS Prelims Magic Book, followed by the NCERT book along with other reference books. Further, continue noting down important points from the other recommended text books.

Make sure you read newspapers. Also, note down landmark events and breaking news reports on a daily basis. Year Books, preferably the India Year Book 2010, published by publications division, government of India, could be of help.

Practice and sheer practice is the true mantra for success . The new exam pattern demands nothing less than that. Try and attempt as many mock tests as possible. A good coaching institute for the same will give you an added advantage.

Post SAT, continue with your preparation. The following months will be crucial than the months prior to CSAT and your preparation should be in full swing. Those who have passed the exam in their first attempt in 2009, stress that a month-long intensive preparation is sufficient for one 'optional.' And make sure you practice your writing skills. Once the main exams are over, you should start preparing for the interview.

The preparation period may be tough and you may at times want to give up. But make sure you are organised and calm. This will help you to hold yourself together and remain focussed.

    With regards

Hi, Let me make you clear about the educational qualification needed to appear in IAS exam. To appear in IAS EXAM a candidate must posess a degree from a recognized university or it's equivalent. It absolutely doesn't matter that the degree has pursued through regular or distance mode. So, there is nothing to worry about. Wish you best of luck for your exam.

Distance degree holders can apply for the course. There are conditions like the course should have been pursued from recognised institute. Also candidate applying should not be over 30 years old. Minimum age required is 21 years. They can specialise in any area of interest during graduation. So while preparing for the main exam the candidate can choose the subject accordingly. It is not necessary to select the same subject for the exam.

    Dear candidate,
-The chances for a distance degree holder to qualify the UPSC Civil Service exams are as bright as for any other candidate who is holding a degree equivalent to graduation or being a final year student in the same.
-Your friend needs to make sure that he works really hard and is dedicated completely towards the syllabus.
-Also he must be of 21-30 years of age,if of general category and be a citizen of india. The upper age limit is relaxable by 5yrs for SC/STs and by 3yrs for OBCs.

Re: Chances for a distance degree holder to crack IAS?

Yes, a distance degree holder can apply for IAS post. To get in to IAS officer post, it is essential to clear UPSC Civil Service Examination. Graduation is the main qualification which is recommended for this post. A distance degree holder can also apply for this post but the institute or university from which you have taken degree should be recognized by Distance Education Council. Maximum age limit required for IAS post is 30 years. Age relaxation is provided to SC/ST/OBC candidates. You need to attend Preliminary exam, Main exam and then go for Personal Interview also. A good amount of preparation should be there to crack Civil Service exams. As part of preparation you can join some coaching institutes and prepare for this exam.
